Caroline Kennedy as U.S. ambassador to Japan

Obama announced Wednesday

President Obama has nominated Caroline Kennedy to be the first female ambassador to Japan.

 オバマ大統領は７月24日、キャロライン・ケネディを駐日大使に指名した。彼女の駐日大使指名の動きはすでに４月1日、アメリカメディアが政府高官情報として報じていた。7月12日には資産および対日交遊関係調査が完了したため、大統領が大使指名を公表したものである。ケネディの第40代駐日アメリカ大使就任は秒読みに入った。上院の承認手続きが残っているが、早ければ７月中に任命され、８月20日前後には赴任するものと思われる。

 米国の極東戦略は中国の軍事的台頭、朝鮮半島情勢の緊迫化で、極めて重要な時期にある。この時期に、外交経験皆無のキャロライン・ケネディの大使就任は、多くの批判が寄せられている。なるほどケネディは外交どころか政界経歴も皆無だった。しかし、それをいうならジョン・ルース大使だって同様だった。我々は政治や外交に口を差し挟む考えなど毛頭ない。しかし、これだけは言える。新駐日米大使赴任後、日本でキャロラインブームが起こるであろう。「Sweet Caroline」Tシャツ入手はお早めに！

Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, is among the most well known surviving member of that family and is largely credited with having helped to launch President. 

この時期にキャロラインが任命されたのはもちろん偶然ではない。今年は1963年11月23日暗殺されたケネディ大統領の50周忌にあたるから、ケネディ家とキャロラインの注目度は極めて高い。

キャロライン・ケネディは故ケネディ元米大統領（1963年死去）の３女で、4人兄妹で生存しているのは彼女だけである。しかも彼女を励ますために生まれた「Sweet Caroline」（ニール・ダイアモンド）は、ボストンマラソン爆弾テロ以後、世界中の人たちに心暖まる励ましの曲として受け入れられた。

オバマ大統領の「Plum Ambassador Posts」作戦は批判の矢面に立たされている。しかし、キャロラインは大統領選のFund Raiserというだけでなく、世界的な知名度と、アンチテロ・ムーブメントを背景にクローズアップされてきた。こういう資質も、もう一つの外交的価値なのは否定できない。
