A tribute to JFK 50 years after his assassination

On November 22, 1963, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was hardly past his first thousand days in White House.

オバマ大統領は11月20日（水曜日）、Arlington National Ceremonyにある故ケネディ大統領墓前に献花した。大統領はミシェル夫人、ビル・クリントン夫妻と同行し、エセル・ケネディ（ロバート・ケネディ未亡人）、ケネディ駐日大使家族も参列した。

1963年11月22日のケネディ大統領暗殺以降は、歴代大統領の献花は恒例行事になってきた。

オバマ大統領は同日午前に、ホワイトハウスで「Presidential Medal of Freedom」の授与式にも参列した。Presidential Medalは故ケネディ大統領が制定したメダルで、合衆国市民が受賞できる最上級メダルである。今年はビル・クリントン、オープラウインフリー、グロリア・スタイナムなど16人が授与された

2013年11月22日はケネディ暗殺から50年のため、献花もメダル授与式も例年より特別な行事が準備され、メディアの注目も集めている。同日夜は、スミソニアン博物館で、歴代の受賞者を招待した晩餐会も開催された。22日にはテキサス州ダラスで追悼式典も行われる。公式行事とは別に、スティーブン・スピルバーグによる映画制作も話題を集めている。

当然、これらの追悼式典には、ケネディ家も招待されるわけで、キャロライン・ケネディが22日以前に駐日大使に赴任したのは、それなりの理由があったと憶測も飛び交っている。現在、公式式典にはジョン・シュロスバーグが主に参列している。
